Clear and reliable information is crucial in the shadow of war. IOM Hungary’s information provision team is dedicated to supporting people displaced by the war in Ukraine, offering them guidance to navigate their new and unfamiliar surroundings.
Ganna and her son exemplify the impact of this support. They left the warzone by planning their journey carefully, trying to collect all the information available. "I had been following IOM Hungary’s updates since the early days of the war, knowing that when the time came to leave, we would have a trustworthy source to rely on," Ganna recalls. "So, when we finally arrived in Budapest, I knew exactly where to turn for the information we needed."
One of Ganna’s first steps in Budapest was to visit the Budapest Helps! Information and Community Centre, where she could collect details about the health-care system, transportation and schooling opportunities in Hungary. She also brought her son to the community space, where he could join other Ukrainian kids and participate in learning activities, he enjoys. "For me, it was important to find a sense of normalcy for him," she emphasizes. "I also enrolled in Hungarian and English language classes and stayed in contact with the IOM Information Provision team. They keep me updated on upcoming programs, legal changes, and new opportunities."
Beyond the useful information, Ganna highlights another crucial aspect of these services: the sense of community. “Besides receiving reliable information, we are part of a community where people understand and support us. Since the full-scale invasion, my circle of friends back home suddenly became small. Here, thanks to IOM, we found new friends,” she adds with a smile.
Ganna’s story highlights the importance of a strong support system for those escaping the war, offering them clear, accessible information and mental encouragement. IOM Hungary continues to work tirelessly to provide support, whether in person, through its hotline, or online, ensuring that those in need are never alone on their journey.
