Awareness Raising Campaign on Trafficking in Human Beings
(2017 - 2018)

Geographical Coverage: Hungary

Duration: 1 April 2017 – 31 December 2018

Donor: Internal Security Fund of the European Union (national allocation)

Partner: Hungarian Police

Status: Completed

Summary: The aim of the project is to prevent victimization through using various channels and means to raise awareness with regards to trafficking in human beings in the most affected geographical areas of Hungary.

The project consist of two components: a research study on the online awareness of the target group (both the Hungarian population most affected by human trafficking as well as the general Hungarian population), and a THB awareness raising campaign, both online and offline.

IOM Hungary will conduct research to gage the target groups’ level of awareness of human trafficking and how it can be prevented. After the online awareness research has been concluded, a report will be published and disseminated. The research study will provide accurate and up-to-date information on the online awareness of the general public and the most vulnerable members of society on trafficking of human beings.

Subsequently, the THB awareness raising campaign will target both vulnerable groups and the general public in Hungary in the sense that not only those at immediate risk of trafficking will be targeted with direct preventative messages, but also the general population living in areas most affected by human trafficking. The awareness raising campaign will be geographically focused on Baranya, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Nógrád, Heves counties, and Budapest to raise awareness to the dangers of trafficking as population living in these areas are the most at risk. The campaign will address both sexual and labour exploitation as a prevalent form of modern day slavery in the affected regions.

The aim is to have a better informed population that is aware of the phenomenon of trafficking in human beings, the most common practices of criminal gangs and how to get help. Increased awareness reduces the likelihood of falling victim of traffickers.

The project is co-financed by the Internal Security Fund of the European Union.
