Most people fleeing Ukraine carry empty suitcases, leaving them to seek life's necessities in their host countries. This is even more challenging for large families. To help its beneficiaries feel welcome in Hungary, IOM addresses urgent needs by providing supplies such as hygiene kits, childcare products, and other basic living essentials. These supplies are critical in ensuring the well-being and dignity of those IOM serves, as they navigate the challenges of settling into a new environment.

Maria, a mother of four, was forced to flee to Hungary, leaving behind everything she had in her hometown of Nikopol.

"When my fourth child was born, I realized we couldn't survive in Budapest on my husband's salary alone, so I sought help through every possible channel," Maria shares. "That's when I found IOM. They have been supporting us ever since, mainly with children's hygiene products like diapers – the biggest consumable in our house now," she adds.

Maria's story is just one among many that highlight the ongoing need for assistance. IOM’s case workers are constantly assessing beneficiaries' needs to provide targeted help.

"I had my own beauty studio back in Nikopol, which I managed even with children. Unfortunately, I can't do that here as a mother," Maria says. "I often imagine myself being at home with my family and pursuing my dream job," she adds wistfully.

"Besides daydreaming, IOM's help keeps me hopeful. I'm grateful for every bit of help because I don't feel completely alone in this foreign country."

According to Yuliia, an IOM case worker, refugees appreciate the visits not only for the aid but also for the human connection, sharing their difficulties with someone who understands them.

Maria's story is a testament to the resilience of those who have fled the war. While they may arrive with empty suitcases, the support they receive keeps them hopeful.
