Geographical Coverage: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary

Duration: February 2005 – January 2006

Donor: Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Status: Completed

Summary: This project aimed at supporting technical co-operation and awareness raising activities in order to strengthen local capacities to prevent and counteract the trafficking phenomenon in Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Hungary. The project has foreseen the setting up of inter-institutional Multidisciplinary Working Groups (MWGs) and the elaboration and distribution of prevention/awareness raising material through the most appropriate channels in order to reach the target group (young people, particularly women and girls, at risk of being trafficked). Activities have been tailored according to each national context and a plan of action has been developed and coordinated among IOM offices and the Italian Ministry of Interior. The initiative, building on former similar programs promoted/supported by the Italian Ministry of Interior in other Eastern European countries, was part of the overall Italian Government strategy to tackle trafficking in human beings and has benefited from the IOM international network of almost 200 offices in the origin, transit and destination countries of the phenomenon.
