Briefing event - Migration Crisis in Europe: Data Collection and Information Management
Hungary - The IOM Hungary office welcomed almost 40 guests among them colleagues from other IOM offices, international organizations, local embassies, state authorities and NGOs for a half-day conference entitled “Migration Crisis in Europe: Data Collection and Information Management by the International Organization for Migration”. In his opening speech Mr Balázs Lehel, Officer-in-Charge at the IOM office in Budapest, provided an overview of the topic, highlighting that the collection of accurate data onhuman mobility is key prerequisite of effective migration governance.
Ms Ivona Zakoska gave a briefing on the mechanism of IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) and then explained how the matrix was adjusted to create the Early Warning Information Sharing Network along the Western Balkan route, from Greek islands to Hungary and Croatia. The primary objective of the Network is to monitor changes in the routes taken by migrants, allowing policymakers to receive up to date holistic information on mixed migration flows along the Western Balkans route and enabling authorities to provide tailored assistance to migrants. The invited panellists from the IOM’s country offices in Turkey, Greece, Serbia and Hungary presented how data collection efforts are undertaken in their respective countries, the challenges they encountered and the openings they see to develop the initiative.
