IOM Hungary Concludes PRM-Funded Activities Supporting Refugees from Ukraine

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Hungary successfully concluded its activities funded by the U.S. Department of State: Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. This comprehensive initiative, running for a year until 14 June 2024, addressed both the immediate needs and long-term well-being of refugees through various activities. These initiatives included:

  • Information Provision and Interpretation: People fleeing Ukraine often face challenges navigating their new environment. IOM’s information provision colleagues ensured they received the crucial information and support they need, while interpretation services also played a vital role in bridging the communication gap between refugees and their host communities.

  • Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance: MPCA offers direct, unrestricted cash transfers. These transfers aim to cover all or some of a household's basic needs, or help with recovery, for a set time. The amount is calculated based on expenses and can be a one-time or regular payment. This approach gives beneficiaries flexibility to choose how to use the money for their most pressing needs.

  • Essential Needs and Food Security: The programme ensured food security by distributing basic food items such as flour, oil, sugar, pasta, and milk, and addressed other essential needs by providing hygiene kits, household appliances, baby products, and furniture.

  • Education and Social Inclusion: Adults and children benefited from educational, artistic, and developmental classes. These classes provided a sense of belonging, fostered skills development, and offered a space for socialization.

  • Mental Health and Psychosocial Support: IOM Hungary’s MHPSS Specialists held mental health trainings and group sessions specifically tailored for refugees fleeing the war.

  • Safe employment: Recognizing the importance of fostering safe and transparent employment, IOM Hungary organized various events, including Labour Mobility workshops and a Labour Migration Roundtable Discussion.
